A1 Licence
The open road, the breeze in your hair, and the thrill of riding the motorbike. It's an amazing feeling, but you have to first obtain your A1 license.
The A1 is the first step on the licensing ladder. It allows you to ride motorcycles and mopeds that are 125cc or larger and has a a maximum power output of 11 kW. It's available from 17 years old and is a great option for those looking to start their motorbike journey in a more accessible way.
To gain an A1 license, you'll have to complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and pass both a theory and two-part practical test. The CBT course is essential for motorcycle training, and helps prepare you for the theory and practical tests. To pass your A1 practical test, you'll be accompanied by an experienced motorcycle instructor. The test should last about 20 minutes and will consist of modules 1 and 2. Module 1 is held at the training centre, and is focused on off-road maneuvers, such as controlled stops, a slalom, and a figure of eight. The remainder of the test is performed on roads and will test your ability to manage a motorbike in a fast speed.
Module 2 will be focused on riding a motorcycle through traffic and managing intersections. You will also be tested on your ability to follow road signs, and understand and apply road rules. You will also be required to show your ability to ride at a low speed, and slow control exercises like turning left, going up and down hills and turning U-turns.
Once you have successfully completed your A1 licence, you'll be capable of upgrading to the A2 license by passing your CBT Theory, CBT and Practical Tests. You can now ride any A2 category motorcycle and carry a passenger.
A2 Licence
The A2 Licence is the second step to getting a full motorcycle licence. The A2 licence is obtainable at the age of 19 years old with an active CBT course. It is a restricted version the full motorcycle licence. It allows you to ride motorbikes with an maximum power output of 47 BHP although bikes that produce more than this can be restricted down to 94 BHP.
If you decide to take the A2 option, you'll be required to pass Module 1 and Module 2 of your motorcycle test. Both tests are conducted on a motorcycle that qualifies for A2 entitlement, and both modules can be booked through the same place as your CBT course and theory test. The A2 test is best suited to riders who passed their CBT course quickly and are prepared financially and physically to ride the possibility of a larger motorcycle.
The first module of the A2 motorcycle test is an indoor session in which you will learn how to manage your bike, including emergency stops and slow speed manoeuvring. A3 Licence
The A2 Licence allows riders to upgrade to larger bikes with more power. It also provides additional benefits that you don't get from the CBT for example, riding on motorways and transporting passengers. You can upgrade from CBT to the A2 licence through additional training and passing the relevant practical exams. The A2 license is valid for two years. After that, it can be upgraded to an unrestricted A license.
The first step to obtain your A2 license is to be able to pass the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and Motorcycle Theory Test. Once you have completed these requirements, you are able to take the Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests. The module 1 test requires you to demonstrate your riding skills on a closed circuit, whereas the module two test involves maneuvers on the open road.
You must demonstrate excellent observation skills during the A2 practical test and anticipate road hazards. A4 Licence
The A4 Licence allows drivers to drive vehicles that have four wheels or more. This licence is valid for buses, trucks and coaches. It also covers vehicles carrying dangerous goods. To obtain an A1-A4 driving license the driver must complete training at a local transportation office or a driving school that is approved. They also must pass a physical examination.
